Jay Slater’s former headteachers have described the shock of hearing about the disappearance of the Oswaldtwistle teenager.

Jay, a former West End Primary School and Rhyddings secondary school pupil, is still missing in Tenerife. No one has heard from the 19-year-old since Monday, June 17.

James McBride, headteacher at West End Primary School, on Aspen Lane in Oswaldtwistle, said the school community hopes he will return home safely.

He said: “Jay was a former pupil at West End Primary School and news of his disappearance has shocked us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his wider family.  The school community hope for his safe return.

Andrew Williams, head teacher at Rhyddings, said staff knew his mum, Debbie Duncan, well.

He said: “Jay was a former pupil at Rhyddings and news of his disappearance has shocked us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, especially his mum, who we knew well.

“She was and is unwavering in her support of her son. Like everyone who knows him, we all want a safe return for Jay and we continue to have hope for him reuniting with his family.”

Jay disappeared after an attempt to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus having attended the NRG music festival.

Emergency services on the island have been searching the Rural de Teno Park and focussing on the small village of Masca since last week.

Yesterday (Sunday, June 23) search teams narrowed their efforts on small buildings close to where Jay's phone last pinged.

Officers from the Guardia Civil in the Canary Island could be seen circling two structures at the bottom of a ravine in Rural de Teno Park.

Efforts appeared to be solely focused on the one area after days of searches in the village of Masca and the surrounding landscape.
