A boy charged with arson following a fire at Burnley bus station which caused more than £180,000 worth of damage has been given a youth referral order.

Two boys were charged with arson following the large blaze which destroyed a double-decker bus belonging to the First Bus Company and damaged a canopy at the station.

The boys, aged 14 and 13, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Preston Youth Court on Tuesday, June 18.

The 14-year-old, from Burnley, was given conditional bail with a doorstep curfew at an address as directed by the Local Authority for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

He is due back before the Preston Youth Court on July 16.

The 13-year-old was sentenced to a 10-month youth referral order and ordered to pay £300 in compensation, which will be paid by the parent.

Fire crews were scrambled to Burnley bus station on the night of Monday, June 10, to reports of a fire involving a bus.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "At 11pm on June 10, five fire engines from Burnley, Nelson, Padiham, and Great Harwood and the aerial ladder platform from Hyndburn attended a bus fire in Croft Street, Burnley.

"Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used two hose reel jets, one foam branch, one triple extension ladder, a 13.5m extension ladder, cutting tools, and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire.

"Crews were in attendance for three hours."

The boys appeared at Preston Magistrates’ Court last week where it was heard the blaze also caused damage to the bus station canopy and the total value of the damage caused was in the region of £180,000.
