A building society branch in Blackburn is preparing to arm people with crucial knowledge to help fend off financial scams.

Colleagues at Yorkshire Building Society on King William Street are holding an event from 9.30am on Thursday, July 4.

Tips and tricks on identifying potential fraud risks will be on offer to the public during the special session.

Topics include recognising standard types of scams such as investment, love interest and imposter.

There will also be guidance on where to find further resources on keeping personal finances secure.

In 2023, 64p of every £1 of attempted unauthorised fraud was thwarted by banks and building societies.

Consumer fraud losses reached £708.7 million, but an additional £1.2 billion was prevented by the financial services industry.

Customer consultant at Yorkshire Building Society in Blackburn, Carley Houghton, said: "Fraud scams can happen to anybody, but older people are often targeted when it comes to financial fraud.

"By hosting our fraud session, we hope to reach as many people as possible in Blackburn to raise awareness around this issue.

"We’ll be talking about the common types of fraud and actions to take to prevent falling victim to fraud."

Yorkshire Building Society is part of the nationwide 'Take Five' campaign, supported by the Government and UK Finance, stressing the importance of staying safe from financial fraud.
