A man has been arrested after being accused of threatening members of the public with a knife after a large fight broke out in Burnley.

At 7.30pm on Wednesday, June 12, police were called to reports of a large number of people fighting on Gordon Street.

On arrival, police officers were confronted by a "significant group", and a foot chase began towards Princess Way after a man ran off.

Officers chased the man into woodland off Clifton Street where police, with the help of a force dog, said they found him "curled up hiding in a stream".

Mohammed Ruman Alom, 33, of Reedley Road, Burnley, has now been charged with possessing a bladed article in a public place.

A spokesperson for Burnley and Padiham Police said: "Earlier in the week, you may have seen a significant policing response in the Gordon Street area of Burnley and we wanted to provide you with an update.

"At approximately 7:30pm on Wednesday, June 12, police received a number of calls to the Gordon Street area of Burnley reporting a large number of people fighting, with one male threatening members of the public with a knife.

"On arrival, officers were confronted by a significant group, and male holding a knife in his hand.

"The male ran off with officers not far behind him.

"Following extensive enquiries by the rest of team 4, the male was sighted again making off towards Princess Way and another foot chase started.

"With the support of ARV, response officers, HZ44 and his dog, PD Bane, officers chased the male into woodland off Clifton Street where PD Bane and his handler located him curled up hiding in a stream.

"Following his arrest, Mohammed Ruman Alom, 33, of Reedley Road in Burnley has been charged with possessing a bladed article in a public place.

"Alom was also wanted on recall to prison, and so he was remanded in custody to appear before the next court.

"We would like to reassure the local community that we believe this was an isolated incident and that there is no threat to people living in the area.

"We would also like to thank the local community for their invaluable assistance in locating Alom."
