An East Lancashire 1950's former council estate is to get 25 new homes.

The seven houses and 18 flats will be built on the site of the former Gleneagles Court of sheltered accommodation complex on Blackburn's Shadsworth Estate.

The one and two-bedroomed flats will be constructed in maisonette form.

There will be three four-bedroomed houses and four with three bedrooms.

All will be for affordable rent from Together Housing Association which owns and manages most of the estate and is currently in the middle of spending £20 million on giving it a makeover.

The social homes provider has submitted a planning application for the new properties on Shetland Close to Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Supporting documents say: "The site previously accommodated ‘Gleneagles Court’ which was used as sheltered housing accommodation and provided 28 bedsits with communal areas.

"The buildings on site were recently demolished as they were no longer fit for purpose, and the site was cleared to make way for new improved housing.

"The main access to the site is from Skye Crescent via Shetland Close.

"The site forms part of the wider Shadsworth Housing Estate. Shadsworth Estate was constructed in 1953 to provide housing to the residents of Blackburn.

"The estate is currently undergoing significant investment through phased housing redevelopment and place-shaping enhancements as part of a wider regeneration programme.

"The layout comprises two rows of terrace houses in a linear formation to the west of the site.

"The proposed flats are in a staggered terrace formation to the east, and a single terrace to the north.

"Parking is primarily located in the central area of the site, close to the buildings which provide natural surveillance.

"All of the dwellings would be affordable rent tenure, let, maintained and managed by Together Housing.

"The proposed development provides 16 ground floor accessed dwellings (seven houses and nine apartments) all with private amenities.

"The scheme also provides nine apartments accessed at ground floor, but with accommodation at first floor.

"These first-floor maisonette types don’t have access to a garden, but they do include Juliette balconies.

"They also have access to shared amenity on the estate, including the upgraded Shadsworth Park and incidental spaces.

"The scheme (flats and houses) will primarily extend up to two storeys, with the four-bedroom homes extending to three storeys.

"The external appearance will be a brick finish with different detailing to add visual interest.

"The proposed flats have been design to ensure that they visually look like terraced homes."
