Two boys have appeared before magistrates charged with arson following a blaze at Burnley bus station on Monday.

The boys, aged 14 and 13, who cannot be named for legal reasons, are charged with destroying by fire a double-decker bus belonging to the First Bus Company.

During the hearing at Blackburn Magistrates' Court, Julia Draper, prosecuting, said the blaze also caused damage to the bus station canopy and the total value of the damage caused was in the region of £180,000.

Both boys were remitted to the youth court sitting in Preston on June 18.

The 13-year-old was remanded on bail with conditions that he lives at his parents' address, obeys a curfew between 7pm and 7am, and has no contact with his co-accused.

The 14-year-old was remanded on bail with conditions that he lives where directed by the local authority and has no contact with the co-accused.

Fire crews were scrambled to Burnley bus station on Monday night to reports of a fire involving a bus.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "At 11pm on June 10, five fire engines from Burnley, Nelson, Padiham, and Great Harwood and the aerial ladder platform from Hyndburn attended a bus fire in Croft Street, Burnley.

"Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used two hose reel jets, one foam branch, one triple extension ladder, a 13.5m extension ladder, cutting tools, and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire.that press

"Crews were in attendance for three hours."
