More than 50 firefighters spent the night tackling a large fire in Blackpool.

The blaze broke out at the former Department of Work and Pensions building in Warbreck Hill Road at around 11.3opm last night (June 7).

Six fire engines remain at the scene this afternoon as fire crews continue to damp down.

Road closures were in place on Warbreck Hill Road and the nearby Bispham Road.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Ten fire engines and numerous specialist appliances responded to a fire involving a disused commercial premise on Warbreck Hill Road in Blackpool.

"Firefighting operations are ongoing, please avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed if you can smell smoke."

In a video update, LFRS group manager Kirsty McCreesh said: "At the height of the incident we've had 10 fire engines here and they've been supported by a number of specialist appliances, including our aerial ladder platform, high volume pump, and water tower.

"There are a number of road closures in place around the area so please take care when you are travelling around.

Photos from the scene taken by the fire service's drone team showed the huge extent of the fire in the middle of the night, engulfing large parts of the building.

Smoke could be seen all the way from the pier at the fire continued to burn earlier this morning.

Crews remain at the scene.
