The fire service was called to an incident in Bashall Eaves yesterday (June 6) but made a surprising discovery when they arrived.

Pictures emerged of a fire in Clitheroe, believed to be in the direction of wedding venue Bashall Barn.

Crews were called to reports of a fire at the venue, which is on the edge of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

On arrival, crews said it was a controlled burn. They stayed at the scene for 30 minutes to check the fire’s safety and give some advice to the landowner.

They said “no fire fighting took place”.

Bashall Barn Ltd confirmed the controlled fire was a parish council beacon on the farm, to mark D-Day celebrations adding that the fire was “under control and supervised”.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Lancashire Fire and Rescue was called out to a fire at Balshall Barn.

A spokesperson for Bashall Barn Ltd, described as an elegant wedding venue with accommodation offering views of the hills & brooks of the Ribble Valley, said: “There was a parish council beacon on the farm to mark the D-Day celebrations last night (June 6).

“It's such a cracking spot overlooking the Ribble Valley. I think people saw the beacon from quite a distance! The fire was all under control and supervised.”

Beacons were lit across the country yesterday to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day operation in the Second World War, when Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, starting the liberation of France and victory on the Western Front.
