One of Blackburn’s biggest mosques has warned worshippers over scam calls.

A message was sent to some members saying people had been contacted by a caller claiming to be from the Madina Mosque on Oak Street.

The mosque said it did not contact people in this way and residents should hang up if they receive the call which asks them for a verification code.

In a message to worshippers, a spokesperson said: “We have been made aware by some members of the public about phone calls being received from someone claiming to be from Madina Masjid.

“They are claiming there is a Zoom meeting being held by the masjid and they require a verification code to add people to the call. However, the code is to transfer all your WhatsApp data to their system.

“This call is not from anyone associated with Madina or Raza Masjid. We would never request any pass codes or verification numbers from the public.

“We urge anyone who receives this call to hang up immediately.”

Similar scams have in recent years been sent via text message claiming to be sent from Zoom.  BT revealed the text message says you have a voicemail on the platform and to listen to the message you must dial a premium rate telephone number.

The text message does not come from Zoom and if you call the number the call will cost £6 plus charges.
