In the video, he said: “I want to say a quick message from me and my character Simon, to all the fans of Coronation Street.

“It’s been a fantastic experience. I have loved being here and I have loved being a part of the nation’s favourite street.

“I want to say a big old thank you to everybody who has supported me over the years and all the people I’ve worked with.

“It’s been an honour and I will always cherish my time here on Coronation Street.”

Posting to his personal page, Alex said it is the “end of an era”.

He said: “Thank you to everyone for supporting me over the years. To my Coronation Street family, I adore you all and will miss you dearly.

“I hope you can continue to join me on this crazy journey into the performance world.”

In an episode, that aired on June 3, Simon left Weatherfield to join his dad, Peter Barlow, on a yacht.

Now aged 22, Alex joined Coronation Street in 2008 aged just seven-years-old.

The show’s producers have given Alex many challenging and hard-hitting storylines over the years, including when the rogue teen became abusive towards his step-mum Leanne Battersby after she adopted him.

In 2011, Alex was awarded Best Young Performance at the British Soap Awards.
