Residents in part of an East Lancashire market town will get the chance to vote twice on General Election day.

As well as taking part in the national poll called by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, people living in Clitheroe's St Mary’s ward will be asked to participate in a Ribble Valley Borough Council by-election.

It follows the resignation of sitting councillor Stewart Fletcher, who has stepped down to start a new life in Scotland.

The Progressive Liberal has moved to a home near Stornoway on the remote island of Lewis. His wife, Kerry, has started a new island hospital job.

Borough councillors make important decisions on running services, such as planning, recycling and refuse collection and sport and leisure.

Voters in St Mary’s ward on July 4 will not just have the chance to vote for their MP in the new Pendle and Clitheroe constituency, but also for Mr Fletcher's replacement on Ribble Valley Council.

The polling station for St Mary’s ward is Clitheroe Parish Church in Church Street and a list of candidates will be available on the authority's website from 4pm on June 10.

Those who choose to vote in person will have to be registered to vote and show photo-ID, such as a passport, driving licence or bus pass following a recent change in electoral law.

Residents who do not have one of the accepted forms of ID can apply for free photo-ID, called a voter authority certificate.

To apply for a certificate, they need to provide a photograph, full name, date of birth, the address at which they are registered to vote and national insurance number or other form of proof of identity, such as a birth certificate, bank statement or utility bill.

The deadline to apply for a voter authority certificate is 5pm on Wednesday, June 26.
