So that’s how they did it! Work underway creating the liveries for a number of new double deckers at East Lancashire Coachbuilders in 1971.

Lancashire Telegraph: East Lancashire Coachbuilders in 1971

Every bus went through the painting and finishing department where a bus company’s colours were applied by hand. Not sure a plank and a couple of stepladders would satisfy modern health and safety legislation.

The company, based at Whitebirk, had a national reputation for building both single and double decker buses.

It had been founded in 1934 by Walter Smith and would continue to operate until going into administration in 2007 before a series of buyouts and takeovers saw it continue in Blackburn until 2012.
