A Grade-II listed working men’s club has withdrawn its plans to improve its large beer garden by installing two pergolas.

The Lamb Club WMC, in Church Street, Barrowford, had submitted an application to construct the metal structures in its garden area back in 2021.

However, following responses from the local parish council objecting to the plans, and a protracted three-year wait, the application has been withdrawn.

The pergolas would have had a roof which could be manually opened or closed, and side shutters, to provide extra space for patrons.

In its objection, Barrowford Parish Council said the metal structure would be “diametrically at odds” with the 1696 building, and while outdoor spaces are needed these were “a step too far”.

Responding to the council’s concerns, the agent for the Lamb Club said the plans “would not destroy” the building and were in the most appropriate position in the beer garden.

However, after a protracted application process, which has stretched out more than three years, and included updated plans for a pergola on the grassed area of the terrace, the application has been cancelled by the club.

The application was finally withdrawn on May 21.
