A flood alert has been issued for two parts of East Lancashire as heavy rain continues to batter the region today (May 23).
The Environment Agency issues flood alerts where forecasts show flooding may be possible from either rivers, high tides, surges, or strong winds at sea.
The agency says people should 'act now' and that 'flooding is expected' at Sefton Street Watercourse in Brierfield and at Walverden Water in Nelson.
The warning in Brierfield covers Walter Street, Guildford Street, Holden Road, and Quakers View.
River levels are rising rapidly on the watercourse and will continue to be monitored.
In Nelson, flooding is expected in Bradley Road, Sagar Street, Brook Street, Southfield Street, Pendle Industrial Estate, and Riverside Business Park, and could also affect Nelson & Colne College.
A government spokesperson said: "If a flood alert is issued, you should:
- be ready to follow your flood plan
- have insurance documents and any medications ready
- avoid walking, cycling or driving through any flood water
- move any livestock and farming equipment away from areas likely to flood"
