Prince Harry and Meghan’s bombshell announcement that they were ‘stepping back’ as working royals stunned the world when it was made in January 2020.
With more than a quarter of the vote (26%), it triumphed in the poll by Alton Towers Resort ahead of the notorious 2001 Who Wants To Be A Millionaire cheating scandal (18%) and The Willy Wonka Experience (17%) from earlier this year.
Alton Towers Resort undertook the survey of 2,000 people following the launch of Nemesis Reborn.
The iconic coaster, formerly Nemesis, is back with a vengeance for the 2024 season after an epic multi-million pound transformation.
A brand new storyline sees the creature that gives the ride its name suffer the ultimate betrayal at the hands of the shadowy organisation known as The Phalanx.
Originally tasked with keeping the creature safely under control, instead they imprisoned her underground and experimented upon her - before she finally broke free to wreak vengeance.
Fourth place in the survey was claimed by the Wagatha Christie dispute between Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy (15%). Pop impresario Louis Walsh describing Jedward as “vile” rounds out the Top Five with 12%.
The top 10 also features iconic moments including the Great British Bake Off Bingate incident that saw Diana remove Iain’s Baked Alaska from the freezer (11%).
It is joined by Robbie Williams breaking the hearts of millions of Take That fans by walking out of the group (10%) - and Harry Clark pulling off the ultimate betrayal in The Traitors grand final by cheating Mollie out of the prize money (9%).
Britons were also asked to decide the biggest betrayals in soap and TV drama history.
Friends took the first two spots with Ross saying the wrong name at the altar first (17%) followed by the ‘We’re on a break’ situation (16%). The Red Wedding massacre in Game Of Thrones took third place (13%).
The iconic EastEnders scene where Zoe Slater says to Kat: “You ain’t my mother”, Dot Cottan’s ‘urgent exit’ in Line Of Duty and Sang-woo’s treatment of Ali in Squid Game all made it into the top 10.
Bianca Sammut, Divisional Director at Alton Towers Resort, said: “Since re-opening in March more than 200,000 thrillseekers have already experienced the monster’s vengeful return.
“It’s embodied in the new dark look that sees her red veins snaking along the entire length of the black track.
“As a nation Britain is defined by its sense of fair play. That’s why we find betrayals so hard to stomach.
“As our iconic Nemesis Reborn beast suffered the ultimate betrayal at the hands of her captors, we wanted to shine a light on these iconic moments.
“From Megxit to Wagatha Christie and The Willy Wonka Experience we’re glad to have finally settled the ultimate debate over Britain’s Biggest Betrayals.”
Alton Towers also explored the nation’s attitudes towards being betrayed and found that most people (11%) hold a grudge for less than a day, followed by two to three days (10%) and one day (9%).
We think our partners are most likely to hold a grudge for the longest (18%) followed by siblings (15%) and work colleagues (10%).
The home (24%) is where we are most likely to fall out with someone, followed by the pub and at work (16%).
