The new leader of Darwen Town Council has set out his priorities for the coming year including promoting the full range of events it supports and boosting the area's smaller parks.

Last week's annual meeting of the parish authority voted for Darwen West's Cllr Jonathan Hamer to take the reins.

It also confirmed his ward colleague Cllr Stephanie Brookfield as its 'Mayor' and chair for a further two years.

Cllr Hamer, who lives in Cobden St in the town and has been a Darwen Town Councillor since 2021, said: "We want the residents of Darwen to know what great events are made possible by the Town Council precept.

"Many people know about Darwen Live and the Christmas lights switch-on but there are other great events in the Darwen Town Council calendar including the Scooter Rally, Brass Band Competition and our annual summer event in the market square.

"Darwen Town Council has always supported local parks, this year we want to expand our support to include smaller green spaces including, 'The Barrow', 'Watery Lane Park' and others.

"Through the Darwen Town Council Awards scheme, we have been able to support some great local projects that serve the residents of Darwen.

"From projects aiming to eliminate food poverty in Darwen to activities for older people, we want to make sure we support great local projects and also let the people of Darwen know about it!

"Last year we started work to revitalise the heritage structures and sites in Darwen. We want to continue that this year by improving the area around the Boer War Memorial including painting the railings.

"The Darwen Town Council precepts pays for the bedding of flowers in various planters around Darwen and also for putting up flags on special occasions.

"We want to continue that this year including making the town look appropriate for the 80th anniversary of D-Day and other events."

May 2's Darwen Town Council elections returned 12 Labour councillors and one Conservative.
