The early May bank holiday is forecast to be a washout, as thunderstorms are set to hit Blackburn and other parts of the UK.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, which is in place from 1pm until 9pm today (May 6). All parts of East Lancashire are covered by the warning.

Heavy downpours could lead to flooding and travel disruption.

The Met Office has warned the public to expect:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of fast-flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

In Blackburn, temperatures are expected to reach highs of 17°C and lows of 11°C. Sunny spells are expected to turn to cloud and light rain from 4pm.

The rest of the week is expected to be mild, with temperatures set to peak at 20°C at the weekend. A mixture of sunny spells and cloud has been forecast throughout the week.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “A cloudy picture to start bank holiday Monday. Damp at times too with scattered showers, though sunny spells are expected by the afternoon in between any showers, these are a little heavy at times.

“Feeling warm in the sunshine.”
