A family have released new footage of a pensioner being knocked over in the hope it will help catch the hit and run driver.

Mohammed Akbar, 95, was hit by a car in Audley Range at around 1.50pm on Good Friday (March 29). The driver of the grey BMW 318d failed to stop at the scene.

Mr Akbar had been dropped off and was crossing the road to pay a bill at a shop and was hit as the car turned right out of Lambeth Street.

In new footage the driver callously ploughs into the pensioner. The male driver momentarily slows down to go around Mr Akbar and then pauses.

He then leaves the scene without checking on the pedestrian.

People rushed to help Mr Akbar as he lay on the ground.

Mr Akbar's son, Masood Akhtar, said: “It has been an extremely distressing time for us.

“I personally have avoided the road and can not go anywhere near it. It is too difficult and I know some of my other family members are the same.

“We are just hoping that the individual comes forward or someone else who is aware of this can let the police know.”

He added: “We would like to thank everyone who has been so supportive and my father is taken in by the amount of support he has received from people across the town.

“I think people are very concerned that this could happen in broad daylight and it could have been anyone’s family member.

“My father is very independent even at his age and he just wants to get back out and about and does not want to let this bring him down.”

The incident was caught on a number of CCTV cameras from nearby shops, showing the car pulling out despite Mr Akbar crossing the street.

The former bus driver suffered bruises all over his body, and injuries to his knees and jaw. He was taken to hospital but was now back at home recovering.

Earlier this week the family said Mr Akbar was very careful when crossing.

Masood had said: “How can you justify that? Have some heart. He just left and did not even bother to stop and see how our dad was.”

Masood also called for drivers to be far more careful on the streets and slow down.

On Saturday, police launched an appeal for anyone who has information on the whereabouts of the driver to come forward.

They said they were also looking to hear from witnesses or anyone with dashcam, CCTV, or mobile phone footage capturing the BMW before or after the crash.

Sgt Pete Fayers, of the road policing unit, said: “This collision has left a pensioner seriously injured and my thoughts are with him and his loved ones at this time.

“I want to appeal directly to the driver of the BMW to do the right thing and make contact with the police straight away.”

Anyone with information or footage should email 3909@lancashire.police.uk or call 101, quoting log 670 of March 29.
