A Lancashire village has been named one of England’s top holiday cottage destinations in a new list.
Schofields Insurance provides holiday home insurance and it has conducted a study to find the top destinations in England for those who are searching for a holiday cottage experience.
As part of the research, Schofields Insurance surveyed 1,000 adults aged over 18 in the UK to identify their top locations for holiday homes which it says helped to uncover a number of villages and small towns that rarely appear in lists for the top holiday cottage destinations in England.
Schofields Insurance used data such as crime rates and a tourist attraction score to compile the list which identifies the most charming and safest villages across England that offer plenty to do nearby for families, couples and solo travellers.
It looked at Rightmove’s House Price Index and property market trends plus the National Trust website.
Aughton in Lancashire made the list alongside three other north west locations – Middlewich and Brereton in Cheshire and Eskdale in Cumbria.
What was said about Aughton?
The research found that Aughton is the safest small town in Lancashire and the 36th safest out of all Lancashire towns, villages and cities.
Schofields Insurance said: “Aughton, a residential parish adjoining Ormskirk, is well regarded as one of the most attractive residential districts in Lancashire and is now famed as being a haven for foodies with more Michelin stars in this small town than Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool combined!

“Three Michelin star restaurants, Moor Hall with two stars, the Barn and Sō–lō have really put Aughton on the map for those with a discerning palate!
“Aside from its food, Aughton is home to Gorse Hill Nature Reserve and is excellently located to explore local nearby tourist attractions such as the National Trust’s Formby coastline and the red squirrel reserve, Knowsley Safari and is close enough for a punt at the races at Aintree.
“It is also the safest small town in Lancashire and the 36th safest out of all towns, villages and cities in Lancashire too.”
