A quaint Lake District pub with a rich and long history has been named one of the best pubs worth visiting in the UK.
Travel writer Will Hawkes said: "The prerequisites for a great British holiday, as I see it, are threefold: attractive scenery, decent weather and at least one great pub.
"Given the rate at which our pubs continue to close, finding the latter is not as easy as it once was, so it’s important to support the really good ones."
Black Bull Inn, Coniston
Writing in The Telegraph, Hawkes said: "A great pub is one thing; a great pub with an excellent brewery at the back is even better. The Black Bull incorporates Coniston Brewing Company, which belies its small size with the quality of its beer: it has won the Champion Beer of Britain not once but twice, with different beers.
"Brewer and owner Ian Bradley, whose talent for brewing is matched only by his passion for cars and bikes, clearly knows what he’s doing.
"The pub itself is a 400-year-old coaching inn, perched between Coniston Water and the looming Old Man of Coniston, one of the highest fells in the Lake District. A large outside seating area is the perfect place to enjoy it all when the sun shines."
According to the Black Bull's website, "The Black Bull Inn and Hotel was built around 400 years ago as a coaching inn providing accommodation for travellers, coachmen and horses. The Inn is situated in the picturesque village of Coniston, beside the beck and in the shadow of the ‘Old Man’ mountain.
"We have 11 comfortable bedrooms each with bath or shower en-suite, colour television, tea/coffee making facilities, hair-dryer, full central heating and double glazing. The character of the rooms and inn has however still been retained.
"We serve a range of light snacks and hearty dishes to accompany our vast range of on-site brewed ales
"The most recent addition to our hostelry was a microbrewery, Coniston Brewery, in 1995 in which we brew our own beer, Bluebird Bitter and Old Man Ale. These are made using only the finest natural ingredients available and our local mountain water. The beer is cask conditioned before being sold to our discerning customers in the bar."
