Police have confirmed a man has died following an incident at a train station which caused numerous services to be cancelled this morning.

British Transport Police said officers were called to Church and Oswaldtwistle railway station in Market Street, Church, early this morning to reports of a person on fire.

The incident led to the station being shut off to the public, with services running between Blackburn and Hebden Bridge cancelled while police and other emergency services dealt with the incident.

Now, BTP have confirmed that a man involved in the incident was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lancashire Telegraph:

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Church and Oswaldtwistle Station at 6.27am today following reports of a person on fire at the location.

"The person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"The platform was closed whilst forensic officers carried out an initial investigation of the scene.

"The station reopened at 10.35am. Enquiries establishing the circumstances are ongoing."

As well as police, crews from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service were also called to the scene.

Witnesses at the scene earlier told the Lancashire Telegraph it had been a case of self-immolation, the act of setting oneself on fire.

The incident is thought to have occurred at around 4am.

When the platform reopened, remnants of a fire could be seen in a shelter on the platform, while one of the seats in the shelter showed signs of damage.

St. Andrews ward councillor Peter Britcliffe said he was very sad to hear of the incident.

He said: "This is a tragic incident and very sad and our condolences go to the deceased's family.

"I would urge anyone to seek assistance and help if they are feeling low. I would ask people to contact organisations such as the Samaritans who are on call at all times of the day."

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for more information about its involvement.

Rail operator Northern has since confirmed that all lines are now open and trains running, though some may be delayed due to this morning's incident while others may be cancelled to allow the schedule to get back to running on time.
