Firefighters tackled a car fire in the early hours on Yorkshire Street, Burnley.

 The shell of the black Mercedes was seen this morning on the town centre road.

One fire engine from Lancashire Fire and Rescue attended the vehicle fire at 02:15am on Saturday, February 24.

The passer-by said: “I was walking into town and just came across it.

"It’s disappointing to see something like that in such a prominent location in the middle of the Town 2 Turf roadworks.

"Thankfully there’s no away fans having to walk past that on their way to Turf Moor today.

"Hopefully it’s removed as soon as possible.”

Town 2 Turf is a £6.1 million scheme secured from the Levelling Up Fund and other sources to undertake significant improvement works to the route between the town centre and Turf Moor.

There is currently no police cordon around the car at 11:30am.

The rear of the car is more damaged than the front.

There is no apparent damage to any nearby buildings, road or pavement.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "At 02:15am on Saturday, February 24, one fire engine from Burnley attended a vehicle fire on Yorkshire Street, Burnley.

"Firefighters used two hose reels to extinguish the fire.

"Crews were in attendance for approximately one hour and ten minutes."

Lancashire Police have also been contacted.
