A man followed his ex-partner to a car park before assaulting her over a dispute as to why she blocked his phone number.
Shoaib Shakil, 23, appeared at Preston Crown Court relating to offences of assault by beating and harassment, as well as two counts of breaching a non-molestation order and one count of failing to answer bail.
On December 12, 2022, having had a brief relationship with Shakil, the victim went to McDonald’s in Colne with her sister to get some food.
After returning to the car with the food and starting to eat, they noticed Shakil was sat in his car in the same car park, so they drove away to find another spot.
After arriving at a different car park, they began to eat again, but Shakil arrived at the same location shortly after.
He entered the rear passenger seat of the car and demanded to know why the victim had blocked his phone number. Both of the women demanded that he leave the car.
He did, but opened the driver’s door and grabbed the victim by both hands, trying to drag her out of the vehicle.
She eventually got out to stop him doing this, at which point he repeatedly pushed her in the chest. She tried to escape by going over the road, but Shakil grabbed her and started to shake her.
The victim sustained bruising on her body as a result of the assault, and following his arrest on April 9, 2023, he provided a no comment interview.
Regarding the other offences, Shakil was given a non-molestation order by Blackburn Magistrates’ Court in February 2020 against his then wife, which was extended to the same date in 2021.
On October 20, 2020, police in the West Midlands were called to a house in Birmingham to reports of an altercation.
Here, they found the defendant and his wife. After establishing the terms of the order, police put it to Shakil and he said he thought it had been revoked.
Two days later, officers were again called to the same address, where this time they were refused entry and found Shakil had barricaded the door.
Officers gained entry through a rear door and arrested Shakil again for breaching the order. Officers asked the woman about the order and she said she had asked for it to be revoked, though there was no evidence this had been done.
Prosecuting, Hanifa Patel also said Shakil had appeared before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court for an allegation of assault and was bailed to appear on May 9, 2023, but he failed to attend.
He entered a guilty plea to this offence at Preston Magistrates’ Court on January 5. He was convicted of all other offences.
Mitigating, David Morton said his client had no previous convictions before these aside from one caution for burglary in 2015.
Sentencing, Recorder Charlotte Deane said: “The relationship deteriorated such that she became terrified of you. She recognised you were there and moved to another car park to get away from you.
“You demanded to know why she blocked your phone number. They screamed at you to leave. You tried to drag her out, pushed her, shook her.”
Regarding the other offence, Recorder Deane said: “Police were called to the property and you were found to be there again. You barricaded yourself in the house.
“You entered a not guilty plea and you were convicted in relation to that offence.”
Shakil, of Grouse Street, Keighley, West Yorkshire, but previously of Clitheroe, was sentenced to 34 weeks in prison.
With time spent on remand, it is expected he will be released in roughly one week.
