The M6 in Lancashire was closed for more than two hours on Saturday night due to a multi-vehicle crash.

One woman has been taken to hospital.

Police and Highways initially held traffic on a section of the northbound carriageway between junctions 32 for Preston and the M55, and junction 33 near Forton, at around 8pm on Saturday, February 17.

Soon after, at 8,27pm, the northbound carriageway was completely closed, with reports saying all emergency services were on scene.

Information from Highways North West suggested that a serious crash had occurred and the M6 needed to be shut so that it could be safely dealt with.

On Sunday morning (February 18), the police confirmed that four vehicles had been involved in the crash and one woman was taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the police said: "It was a four-vehicle RTC.

"We were called to it at 7.41pm. It’s down as a minor-injury RTC and one woman was taken to hospital."

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "At 7.52pm on February 17, four fire engines from Preston, Fulwood, Garstang, and Lancaster attended a road traffic collision between J32 and J33 on the M6 northbound motorway.

"The incident involved four vehicles. Firefighters released one casualty from their vehicle using Holmatro spreaders, cutters, glass management equipment, and Milwaukee small tools.

"The casualty was then conveyed to the hospital by North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) paramedics.

"Crews were in attendance for an hour and fifty minutes."

Diversions were put in place for about two hours and at around 10.20pm the motorway was reopened between junctions 32 and 33.

A spokesperson for the police said last night: "Further to our earlier post regarding the closure between J32 - J33 on the M6 northbound, we can now update you that the motorway has reopened.

"Thank you for your patience."
