Rossendale and Darwen MP Sir Jake Berry has asked his followers whether Easter is coming too early after seeing chocolate eggs on sale in Tesco in Haslingden.

Sir Jake said he had been to the Tesco in Syke Street with his children today (Tuesday, January 2) when he spotted the chocolate treats.

While clarifying he "did not want to be a complete and utter killjoy", he went on to ask why Easter eggs are already in shops.

This year, Easter - marking story of Jesus' death and resurrection in the Bible - falls on Sunday, March 31, the earliest date it has fallen on since 2016.

Posting a video on X (formerly Twitter) Sir Jake asked what his followers thought of the issue.

He said: "Now I don't want to be a complete and utter killjoy but I have just run the gauntlet here at Tesco's in Haslingden with my kids past all the discounted toys, only to see that the Easter bunny is already on the shelf.

"Easter, March 31, this year. Let me know in the comments below whether you think Easter is coming to our supermarkets and shops too early."

Tongue-in-cheek X user, Jeremy Westhead, replied to Sir Jake and said: "It sounds like the free market economy is working. Giving people choice."

Budget chain B&M is already selling Easter eggs and displays had also been spotted in various Tesco and Co-op stores before the New Year, much to the surprise of some shoppers.

Asda, which started displaying Christmas products in September, said customers like it as they want to 'spread the cost' and it allows them to get ahead with shopping.

A spokesperson for Tesco also said: "We know some of our customers like to buy their eggs early so we have started selling a small selection in some of our stores."
