Areas of a road in Ramsbottom have been dug up as part of work to improve the water quality of the River Irwell.
The work on Nuttall Lane, which is being carried out by water supplier United Utilities, is also set to help the river cope better during heavy rainfall.
Back in August last year, United Utilities conducted surveys and ground investigations before the work started.

The work will involve United Utilities carrying out a range of surveys and assessments, clearing trees and vegetation and reinforcing the road surface on Nuttall Lane. This phase of the problem is expected to take around five months.
The main construction involved is due to begin this spring, and the work including associated landscaping is aimed to be completed by spring 2026.
The work will be carried out in stages and involves the construction of an underground storm water tank which will be capable of holding up to 3.5 million litres of water, new connecting pipes into the sewer network and two new above ground control units.

During these works some footpaths and public rights of way will be closed and diversions will be put in place.
A spokesperson said: “We’ve brought forward investment to allow us to go much further and quicker to fulfil these commitments and are already working on lots of projects, including here in Ramsbottom.

“We understand that this work is taking place within an area of heritage interest and locally designated woodland.
"We’ll do all we can to make sure the work is carried out sensitively and minimises disruption to the community and those who enjoy Nuttall Park.”
