A van driver has been charged for a drink driving offence after motorway users allegedly spotted a vehicle 'drifting' across the lanes.

The flatbed Ford Transit, which was towing a forklift truck, was said to be seen drifting across lanes on the M6 northbound, narrowly missing other vehicles.

The truck was reported to officers yesterday (December 27) at around 2pm.

When officers stopped the vehicle and carried out a breathalyser test, it is alleged the driver blew more than double the legal limit.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: "Our officers stopped the vehicle, and the driver was subsequently arrested, providing a breath sample of 99 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath, almost three times the legal limit of 35mcg, once in custody.

"Gavin Ellidge, 47, of The Ferns, Bacup, was charged with driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above the limit and bailed to appear at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court on April 4."
