If ever a photo illustrated the impact that the textile industry had on East Lancashire then this is possibly it.
What might be surprising is that it is actually from the 1950s, so relatively, not that long ago. It shows Burnley’s Calder Vale area with rows of terraced houses cheek by jowl with the mills which employed the majority of those living there.
In this one photo alone, we can count no less than 18 mill chimneys and there looks to be a waterway, bottom right. Presumably to supply the mills.
