How long have you lived in the house?
We have lived on the site since we bought the property in December 2009.
What first attracted you to it?
We were attracted to the rural location but that was in easy reach of towns in Lancashire and Yorkshire. The property also offered us great potential to create something really special, which we think we have achieved.
How have you changed the house?
We changed the house significantly as it was originally the original parsonage at the front but with a barn attached to the rear, which was being used as the local youth club and a modern poorly constructed flat roof extension off the side of the youth club which the local football team were using as changing rooms.
We demolished the changing rooms and converted the barn into living accommodation and knocked it through to join the main vicarage. We then commissioned the hand-crafted orangery to be built onto the side of the vicarage to form the open-plan living-dining accommodation opening out onto the main garden area. We completely refurbished the whole property, installed a ground-source heat pump, underfloor heating system and added bathrooms and en-suites.
We constructed a three-berth garage block which was made to look like an original stable/garage block using bespoke masonry items and traditional construction techniques. We then created a new access around the field to the back of the property and added flagged patio areas to the north and south of the property.
What will you miss most about the house?
It’s been a great family house and we’ve had some fabulous times there and the location is simply superb with easy access into open countryside for walking but still having local access to pubs, shops as well as good public transport for trips further afield. It’s just such a beautiful property and we’re very proud of what we’ve created… we’ve loved being here, but with all the family having now moved on, it’s simply too big and it’s time to move on.
Describe the garden:
It’s more than a garden, it has surroundings for every season from the recently completed south-facing sun patio for lazy afternoons, to the large lawned garden at the other side of the house, which has been a great area for garden parties and family gatherings. The grounds extend to six acres so there’s lots of room for lots of different potential uses.
