Blackburn Rovers Women’s team players Meg Hornby and Hannah Coan cheered on more than 100 girls in the Utilita U13 Girls Cup.

The tournament was ran by Blackburn Rovers Community Trust at OLSJ, with 11 teams in total taking part, with the winners representing the Club in the next round of the competition.

Haslingden High ran out winners, and will compete in the next round of the competition against other schools who won their respective club tournaments.

The final to the whole tournament will be played at Wembley Stadium next year.

Forward Hornby said: “It was great to see how many children were at the EFL Girls Cup and just enjoying themselves.

"The weather wasn’t the best but they all had a smile on their faces. It was great to see.

“The women’s game is growing and there are more girls getting involved now. It looks like it is unstoppable at the moment.

“I loved talking to the girls and most of them don’t know our story. It isn’t always a straight road, one minute you can be playing for your school and the next minute you could be in an academy somewhere."

Defender Hannah Coan added: “When we were in school we wouldn’t have seen this many girls teams playing. It was great to see all of the games.

“The girls were all committed and having fun and it is great to see so many of them getting involved.

“The fact Blackburn Rovers Women’s team are doing player appearances such as this is very important. Hopefully we can keep inspiring them all to carry on playing football.”
