There are long queues on a Blackburn road due to ‘poor’ management of traffic lights at a busy junction, drivers say.

Traffic on King Street and Whalley Banks is regularly backed up to the Tesco Express on Bank Top.

This is due to traffic not being able to turn right onto Wainwright Way.

This morning, well past the rush hour, there was a long queue of traffic as the priority of the traffic lights was only permitting vehicles to turn right for a restricted time. This led to long queues.

Fewer than 10 cars could turn right before the lights turned red again.

It appears oncoming traffic from King Street heading out of the town centre was to blame as much as the traffic lights.

Talib Hussain, who uses the route regularly, said: “I have noticed this over the past week. A lot of drivers turn right as they head towards Bolton Road and the hospital.

"Something has changed on some of these junctions and it is noticeable. I think whoever is setting them obviously does not live and drive on the route regularly."

Lancashire Telegraph:

Another driver, who uses the route daily, said: “The closure of Oakenhurst Road has not helped but it was like this before. Still, drivers need to be able to turn right on to Wainwright Way and this is not possible as the priority green arrow is not on long enough.

“You would think this route would stay green longer than traffic heading in the opposite direction!”

Further up on Barbara Castle Way queues are forming at the junction with Montague Street. Again, the traffic light system is not permitting more than a dozen vehicles through at a time.

Blackburn with Darwen Council have been contacted for comment.
