Blackburn with Darwen’s crime rate increased again in September having fallen for the first time in three months previously.

Data from police.uk shows 1,684 crimes were committed in the borough in September, with violence and sexual offences topping the list having fallen behind anti-social behaviour previously.

The overall total of crimes increased by 8.01 per cent having decreased by 9.83 in August.

Using the data, it is possible to map exactly where each crime took place within the borough and determine how many instances of each crime there was.

Of the 14 crimes listed in the data, there were seven increases, six decreases, and one stayed the same.

‘Other theft’ saw the biggest percentage increase, going up by 25.37 per cent from 67 instances to 84.

The remaining crimes changed as follows:

  • Violence and sexual offences – 479 (August) – 571 (September) – up 19.2 per cent
  • Anti-social behaviour – 501 (August) – 541 (September) – up 7.9 per cent
  • Shoplifting – 107 (August) – 113 (September) – up 5.6 per cent
  • Criminal damage and arson – 118 (August) – 93 (September) – down 21.18 per cent
  • Vehicle crime – 70 (August) – 76 (September) – up 8.57 per cent
  • Public order – 68 (August) – 74 (September) – up 8.82 per cent
  • Burglary – 42 (August) – 48 (September) – up 14.28 per cent
  • Drugs – 28 (August) – 28 (September) – no change
  • Other crime – 30 (August) – 25 (September) – down 16.66 per cent
  • Weapons – 21 (August) – 12 (September) – down 42.85 per cent
  • Theft from person – 11 (August) – 10 (September) – down 9.09 per cent
  • Robbery – 10 (August) – 6 (September) – down 40 per cent
  • Bicycle theft – 7 (August) – 3 (September) – down 57.14 per cent

 

Two other East Lancashire borough recorded an increase in crime.

Burnley went up from 1,167 crimes in August to 1,184 in September, a small increase of 1.45 per cent, while Ribble Valley went up by 1.16 per cent, from 257 to 260.

The other three boroughs all reported decreases.

Pendle dropped slightly by 0.76 per cent from 787 in August to 781 in September; Hyndburn went down from 976 to 926, a drop of 5.12 per cent; and finally Rossendale dropped by 19.07 per cent from 608 crimes to 492.
