An empty former sandwich shop in a busy area of Blackburn could be turned into a new launderette.
Muneer Al-Ghaiathi has applied for planning permission for the conversion of ground floor of the vacant premises in Whalley New Road, Bastwell.
The proposed new use would also have an office and toilet.
A supporting statement submitted with the planning application to Blackburn with Darwen Council says: "The premises comprise of a two-storey building, with a self-contained first floor apartment which is accessed from the rear, all works with regards to sound and fire proofing were carried out few years ago.
"It is sited along a parade of other shops, with first floor residential accommodations, and with non-restrictive parking towards the front.
"The owners have been trying for a number of years to market the property for rent,on a long term basis, intermediately the proposed has operated for retail use and lastly a sandwich shop but without any real success.
"The owners have now been approached by a Yemini businessman who operates a number of launderettes in Manchester, and is now looking to open a similar outlet.
"The proposal is to open and operate a launderette within the usable shop area of approximately 40 square metres.
"The area would cater the installation of two large capacity commercial washing machines and two medium washing machines, with four dryers and a large folding table in the middle.
"The single storey area to rear will be used as an office/CCTV room, and general storage for the caretaker.
"As the premises is sited within a large residential area, the usage will provide a great asset to nearby and local residents covering the surrounding streets, particularly with non-restrictive parking along the length of the road on Whalley New Road.
"Nearby residents will walk to the premises but due to the location of the site, it is expected that some number of customers will arrive by car.
"The proposed laundrette opening hours are Monday to Sunday 8am to 8pm.
"We believe that the change of use of the existing vacant unit into a launderette will make a positive contribution and a major facility to local residents."
