A new ‘Music for Memory’ service is being launched in Rossendale to help people living with dementia and other memory issues.
Rossendale is an ageing population so Rossendale Hospice have noticed a push on dementia services as more residents are being diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
The hospice, which already runs a Dementia Day every Friday, will provide a space for people struggling with memory loss to create music together and socialise.
Susan Smith is a nurse and clinical services team leader, who manages the wellbeing and hospice at home services at Rossendale Hospice.
Speaking about the new music service, she said: “When we have a singalong with the residents at our Dementia Days, they struggle remembering normal things but we found they remember every word from songs from the 60s and such.
“That’s where the idea for Music for Memory came from and we’ve wanted to do it for a long time and now we have the capacity to do it.
“There is quite a push on dementia services as it’s been highlighted as one of the biggest killers which I don’t think a lot of people realise so we wanted to do something that stimulates the mind but is also fun.”
Research shows that music has a positive effect on cognitive function for people living with dementia, however only music services for the memory are only available in 5 per cent of care homes in the UK.
As well as providing support to those with dementia, the service aims to give time out for the carers.
Susan added: “People who look after those with dementia don’t have time for themselves, so this will give them the chance to go for a haircut or do a shop, or meet a friend.
"Or if the carers want to get together with the other carers and share tips they can.
“They do the caring role 24/7 so that time is valuable and they can have time for themselves without having to worry if their loved one is safe because we’ll be there.”
There will be a quiet space in the hospice where carers can chat and tea and biscuits will be served. Staff will be on hand to offer any advice.
Music for Memory starts on Wednesday, November 1, from 2pm to 3.30pm every week, and is open to residents who are registered with a Rossendale GP.
Pre-booking is essential as the nurses expect it to be a popular service. Contact Catherine Hargreaves or Yvonne White to book a space by calling 01706 393870.
