A mother and wife died after consuming an excessive amount of medication, an inquest has concluded.

Kirsty Louise Biggs, 32, suffered from seizures and infections for years, the hearing at Blackburn Old Town Hall heard.

Kirsty, of Carluke Street, Blackburn, had been in and out of hopsital for years and consequently had struggled with mental health in the past, the court was told.

Her husband reported that on the day of her death, Thursday, August 11, 2022, he had left to take their two sons out at 8.30am.

When he came back at 9am, Kirsty appeared to still be asleep as he saw her breathing soundly.

After he had finished some household chores he took her a cup of tea upstairs and brought her medication she was due to take at 11am, when he noticed she was not breathing.

He called an ambulance but paramedics were unable to save Kirsty, and pronounced her dead.

Stuart Biggs, Kirsty's husband of nine years and full time carer, said in a statement: "We as a family were really worried about her hurting herself.

"I believe she should have had better care from mental health services as there was something not right with her."

Kirsty was on a range of medications prescribed by her GP to alleviate pain from her unknown condition.

Toxicologists at Sheffield Teaching Hospital carried out a post-mortem and found toxic effects of morphine from incorrect dosages with other medications.

Kirsty's mother said in a statement: "She was the most caring, beautiful soul that would do anything for anyone and to see them smile.

"She loved Christmas and charity shops and we are extending our garden so we can get lots of Christmas trees to remember her by."

Coroner Kate Bisset said although Kirsty struggled with her mental health, she believed it was not Kirsty's intention to take her own life and was accidental.

Concluding the inquest, Coroner Kate Bisset said: "I am very sorry for your loss.

"It is a tragedy and I am so sorry to her young boys. She had made plans for the future and to go on holiday, and she was let down by inadequate protocols of the mental health system."

Ms Bisset gave a medical cause of death as excessive medication.
