A new artwork, which documents history of the railway over the last century, has been unveiled at Accrington station.
Created by the artist Karen Allerton in partnership with students at The Hollins secondary school in the town, the piece is called ‘Steam to Green’.
The project was supported by Northern through its Seedcorn Fund and provides a pictorial history showing the progress of the rail industry from its steam engine beginnings to the present, greener approach.
It was unveiled at the station on Wednesday, September 27, by Mike Cliffe, chair of East Lancashire and Clitheroe Community Rail Partnership.
Craig Harrop, regional director for Northern, said: “Karen’s collaboration with the students from The Hollins has created a beautiful, and important, piece of art to highlight the progression of the rail industry over more than 100 years.
“It’s a great addition to Accrington station and something that I’m sure our customers will enjoy admiring when using the station.”
Northern said services will be brought to a halt on Wednesday, October 4, as the latest ASLEF strike takes place.
The train operator has published a travel advice calendar for Wednesday 4 to Sunday 8 to highlight when services will be affected.
There will be no Northern services at all on Wednesday 4 when ASLEF members – most of whom are employed as train drivers – stage their latest walk out.
Additional disruption is expected from Monday 2 to Friday 6, due to action short of strike called by ASLEF, and customers are advised to check before they travel as there may be some short notice cancellations to services running on these days.
