Drivers are being warned of overnight delays at the busiest roundabout in East Lancashire.

Lancashire County Council has revealed that resurfacing work will begin at Whitebirk roundabout starting on Friday, September 28.

The work will take place at night between 8 pm and 5am from until October 13 and will involve a full closure of Whitebirk Roundabout.

The motorway entry and off-slip roads at junction 6 will also be closed, with traffic using a variety of diversion routes.

The work follows concerns that the road markings had faded away and drivers were struggling to stay in the correct lane.

The area is on the border with Blackburn but falls within Hyndburn and therefore all road surfacing work is under the jurisdiction of Lancashire County Council.

The works planned by the county council will also replace the road surface, following the previous widening and signalisation works which was carried out more than 15 years ago.

A Blackburn with Darwen Council Roads spokesperson said: " The local diversion route for Whitebirk Roundabout will be via the following roads: Whitebirk Drive, Brownhill Drive, Whalley New Road, Lark Hill, Barbara Castle Way, Eanam, Copy Nook, Bottomgate, Furthergate, Carl Fogarty Way and vice versa.

"The M65 Westbound diversion for Junction 6 will be via Junction 5, Haslingden Road, and Shadsworth Road.

"The M65 Eastbound diversion for Junction 6 will be via Accrington, with diversions in place via junction 7."
