A road in Blackburn was closed this morning due to a 'serious incident'.

There was a large police presence in Chester Street, close to the Jamia Ghosia Mosque, due to a collison involving a pedestrian.

One passer by who saw the cordon put in place by police said it is a 'serious incident'.

At least six police vehicles were at the scene, throughout the morning, along with a fire engine, while a cordon was put in place and was being guarded by uniformed officers.

The section of the road has now reopened to traffic.

Residents on the street had earlier been told to stay inside their homes while police investigated the incident.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “Two fire engines from Blackburn station have attended a road traffic collision.

“It involved one vehicle and one pedestrian.

“The casualty has been released by the fire service and has been taken to hospital via air ambulance.”

A police spokesperson said: "We were called at around 9.20am today (Thursday, September 21) to reports of a collision between a car and pedestrian on Chester Street, Blackburn.

"We are in attendance with paramedics, and the road is currently closed between Higher Audley Street and Brunel Drive.

"Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area and motorists should find alternative routes where possible.

"Anybody with information about the collision is asked to call 101, quoting log 268 of September 21st."

A witness who was at the scene said: "It looked really serious and there are a lot of emergency service vehicles and they quickly closed the road.

"I heard it was someone who lives locally."

Images and videos from the scene seen by the Lancashire Telegraph showed a man trapped under a black Vauxhall Astra vehicle, and firefighters working to free him from under the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle is believed to have remained at the scene following the crash.
