East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust’s catering team has proved they have a recipe for success after its chefs were named best in the region at a cooking competition.

Dylan Lucas, from Blackburn, and Sinto Mulavarickal have now secured a spot in the national finals of the NHS Chef of the Year.

The two chefs created a tantalising three-course meal in just one and a half hours.

The meal not only had to be of high culinary standards but also suitable for a patient menu while taking into consideration plant-based options, allergens and ethnic and cultural choices.

Head chef Dylan Lucas said: “This competition provides us with a wonderful platform to showcase the incredible talents of our culinary team.

"We are immensely proud of this achievement and eagerly anticipate the upcoming finals.

"It was a challenging experience, particularly working in an unfamiliar kitchen environment under extreme heat.”

The competition was a knock-out format with only two teams progressing to the national finals.

Chef Sinto Mulavarickal said: "We are all excited to refocus our efforts and prepare ourselves for the upcoming national finals.

"This opportunity allows us to push our boundaries and further hone our skills."

The final of the competition is set to be held in late October and early November this year, where a series of events will take place.

Teams will gradually be eliminated, leading to an intense finale for the top three teams.

Last year Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital chefs were crowned regional NHS Chefs of the Year.

Chefs Kurt Dillon and Dylan Lucas cooked up a storm to bag the top spot, winning both the ‘chef of the year’ accolade and the prize for best plant-based dish on the day.
