Blackburn with Darwen’s crime rate crept up for the second month in a row in June.

Data from police.uk shows 1,698 crimes were committed in the borough in June, with violence and sexual offences again topping the list despite being one of the crimes to post a decrease.

The overall total of crimes increased by a small amount of 1.43 per cent from May, when there were 1,674 crimes committed.

Using the data, we were able to map exactly where each crime took place within the borough and determine how many instances of each crime there was.

Of the 14 crimes listed in the data, there were eight increases, five decreases, and one stayed the same.

Bicycle theft saw the biggest percentage increase, going up by 83.3 per cent from six instances in May to 11 in June.

The remaining crimes changed as follows:

  • Anti-social behaviour – 520 (May) – 492 (June) – down 5.38 per cent
  • Vehicle crime – 77 (May) – 120 (June) – up 55.84 per cent
  • Criminal damage and arson – 138 (May) – 114 (June) – down 17.39 per cent
  • Other theft – 68 (May) – 109 (June) – up 60.29 per cent
  • Shoplifting – 99 (May) – 102 (June) – up 3.03 per cent
  • Public order – 75 (May) – 91 (June) – up 21.33 per cent
  • Burglary – 59 (May) – 52 (June) – down 11.86 per cent
  • Drugs – 18 (May) – 28 (June) – up 55.55 per cent
  • Other crime – 33 (May) – 22 (June) – down 33.33 per cent
  • Possession of weapons – 19 (May) – 19 (June) – no change
  • Theft from person – 5 (May) – 9 (June) – up 80 per cent
  • Robbery – 5 (May) – 7 (June) – up 40 per cent

 

Three other East Lancashire boroughs reported increases in their crime rate for June too.

The biggest climb, for the second month running, was in the Ribble Valley, which went up by 8.39 per cent, having increased by 18.69 per cent in May.

Pendle increased by 7.58 per cent from 751 in May to 808 in June, while Rossendale went up by 4.27 per cent from 561 in May to 585 in June.

Burnley’s crime rate decreased by 2.57 per cent from 1322 in May to 1288 in June, while Hyndburn’s went down by 1.50 per cent from 995 in May to 980 in June.
