ONE of the oldest privately-owned homes in East Lancashire will be opening up its gardens to the public this weekend to help three charities.
Jean and Ken Kay who own Great Mitton Hall which dates back to the 14th Century will be hosting an open garden weekend. Visitors will be able to explore the magnificent gardens and enjoy some of the finest views across the Ribble Valley.
This will be the 11th year the couple have invited visitors to enjoy their gardens and this year all proceeds will go to the charities Walking Wounded, Combat Stress and HAPPA.
The gardens will be open from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday and admission is £5. As well as the gardens themselves, visitors will be able to enjoy tea and cakes and browse the book stall, plant stall, bric-a-brac stall and a surprise present stall.
Restoring the gardens to their original splendour has been a labour of love for Jean Kay and the ornamental pond is now stocked with around 100 fish. There is also a summer house, rose garden, magnificent topiary and statuary to enjoy.
“We’re just hoping that the weather is kind to us,” said Ken Kay. “That’s the one thing you cannot control. But we are looking forward to welcoming back some familiar faces who come along every year and also to seeing new visitors.
“All the money we raise will go to three very worthwhile charities, so the more people who come along the better.. We’re looking forward to it.”
