A Blackburn Rovers player visited a primary school in Darwen and the children had a fantastic day.

With the season’s preparations ramping up, Rovers player Jake Garrett visited Avondale Primary School to see how they were rounding off what had been another busy year for the school.

The school is one of Blackburn Rovers Community Trust’s Rovers Premier League Primary Stars partner schools.

The Trust has been working with the staff and pupils at Avondale for a number of years now and is excited to announce the recent extension of the partnership.

This will see the Trust continue its commitment to support physical education (PE) lessons and provide support in other areas such as extra-curricular clubs, personal, social, health and economic education, (PSHE) interventions and topic-based workshops to further enhance the children’s education at the school for a further two years.

With the Year 6 pupils marking their final week at the school, Jake took part in a game of foot rounders in the playground before taking questions from the pupils on a variety of topics from who is the loudest teammate to what is his favourite dinosaur.

The Rovers midfielder said: “It has been a really good experience coming to a local school.

“We played football-based rounders. The kids were really good, I was surprised at how good they were. It was really fun to be involved – I even caught a few of the balls which was quite surprising.

“I have answered some questions from the kids.

“There were a lot of Blackburn fans here today asking a load of questions. It would be lovely to see them in a couple of weeks’ time, cheering us on for the start of the season.”

Matthew Clegg, Year 6 teacher and PE leader, said: “It has been great to continue our partnership with Blackburn Rovers Community Trust, ready for next year.

“We have had quite a few years with them already and love the service they provide.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for our pupils who get top quality PE classes, opportunities and experiences.

“It has been fantastic to have Jake down with us. As a Rovers fan myself and season ticket holder, having Jake in the building has been brilliant.

“It was brilliant to see the kids’ faces light up when he walked in the room.

“Those memories will last a lifetime for some of our children. Hopefully it will promote Rovers and get some more fans for the team.”
