Staff from East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust have cycled 60 miles in memory of their friend and colleague who died from lung cancer.

The charity bike ride took place on Sunday (July 9), and the team of 19 cyclists started from Salford Quays and rode all the way to Blackpool’s South Promenade.

Chief executive Martin Hodgson led the ELHT team to undertake the gruelling 60-mile challenge in tribute to their dear friend Jonathon Priestly, who had planned to cycle the route himself but sadly died before this could happen.

Martin Hodgson said: “Jonathon or ‘JP’ as he was known was passionate about enhancing patient experience in our hospitals and had intended to conquer this challenge himself to raise funds for the Trust’s charity ELHT&Me.

“Instead, I had the incredible privilege of completing the event alongside 19 amazing colleagues and together, we honoured his memory by making sure his wish became a reality.

“JP’s presence was felt every pedal of the way, and his spirit inspired us to push beyond our limits. We not only completed the 60-mile challenge but we also created a lasting tribute to a remarkable individual.”

Jonathon joined the trust as directorate manager for Radiology, in December 2019 after previously working in Radiology at Salford Royal Foundation Trust.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2022 and even during treatment, he remained a constant support to his team and directorate. He died in December 2022.

Almost £6,000 has been raised by the cycle ride and once all the funds have been collected the team will decide what equipment will be a fitting tribute for his department.
