A man has been arrested after a sexual assault was reported on a train yesterday (July 5).
The alleged offence happened between Leyland and Preston.
The suspect left the train at Preston and headed into the city centre, but was arrested upon his return.
British Transport Police officers also said he had been shoplifting and was further arrested for that.
A BTP spokesperson said: "A sexual assault on a train between Leyland and Preston was reported to officers yesterday.
"The suspect had headed into the city centre but was arrested when he returned to the station.
"He'd been shoplifting in the meantime so was further arrested for that. Enquiries are ongoing."
While conducting the search for the man, officers also recognised a 15-year-old girl who had been reported missing.
She was approached and directed to Preston police.
