Blackburn businessman Zuber Issa is among four people who will receive special awards from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

The EG Group co-founder will receive an Honorary Fellowship during next week’s graduation ceremonies in Preston.

He will be joined by BBC journalist Victoria Derbyshire, who hails from Ramsbottom, Burnley Council’s outgoing Chief Executive Mick Cartledge, and Amanda Elwen, who has led and developed domestic abuse services within the county.

Running from July 10 to 14 in the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre, the University’s degree and award celebrations will see more than 4,000 students don their caps and gowns across 14 graduation ceremonies.

After taking to the stage, graduates and their guests will enjoy their post-event celebrations on University Square, in the heart of the Preston Campus.

To ensure family and friends around the world can watch the celebratory ceremonies, live streaming will be available on the university’s YouTube channel.

Mr Issa is being recognised for his contribution to business and charity, and in particular to Lancashire and the North West. He will receive his award on Monday, July 10.

Zuber, alongside brother Mohsin, founded Euro Garages (later renamed EG Group) in 2001 and still live Blackburn, and in recent years the billionaires have expanded their business portfolio by taking over supermarket giant Asda.

UCLan alumna Victoria Derbyshire will receive her award on Tuesday, July 11, to acknowledge her significant contribution to journalism and broadcasting.

Amanda will take to the stage on Thursday 13 and is being acknowledged for her significant contribution to the development and management of domestic abuse services in Lancashire.

Mick, who will receive his award on Friday 14, is being recognised for his significant contribution and dedication to local government in East Lancashire.
