A new charity shop has opened in Barnoldswick and it is selling furniture and electrical goods for bargain prices.

Burnley-based charity Church on the Street (COTS) opened the shop in Fernlea Avenue on Wednesday, June 7.

Pastor Mick Fleming, founder of COTS, said the shop will help both those in poverty and also the ‘working poor’ who are trying to save money in the cost of living crisis.

He said: “We are seeing more working poor, and even middle class people, coming to us. They might need new items as theirs has broken down.

“It’s a new phenomenon. It’s not just poor people coming to us anymore, people on all wages are being more mindful of their money as rent increases

“With the cost of living they can’t afford to buy these items full price anymore – they can’t afford the credit and spend thousands on a sofa.”

The charity shop will be selling large items and white goods including beds, washing machines, cookers, televisions, chairs and beyond.

A £50 cooker, £120 tartan armchair and £3 cushions are some of the items for sale in the shop currently.

Mick said: “This is a bigger shop with a better display.

"We will still sell some smaller items, such as clothes, shoes and general items that a charity shop would sell but we are mainly selling the bigger items.”

Mick said there is a great need for a furniture and appliance charity shop in the town.

“I think this is something that is really needed in the area,” he said. “There aren’t many shops in the area that are selling these type of bulky items.

“Our prices are really reasonable which will help those people who just don’t have the money. We only sell good quality stuff as well and will not stock any items that aren’t up to standard.

“If people are in desperate need for items we won’t charge them. Everything is donation.”

This site will join COTS’ existing charity shop in Barnoldswick that just sells items for children.

'Just For Kids' in Albert Road sells toys, prams, cots, baby clothes and other items that expectant mothers or low-income families need.

The charity’s Loaves and Fishes community café is also open in the town.

Loaves and Fishes offers affordable but high-quality hot food and drink, such as coffee and cake, pies, sandwiches and more in a relaxing and friendly environment
