A major road in Blackburn has been closed due to a crash.

Shear Bank Road is closed at the junction with Park Avenue following a crash which took place this afternoon (Sunday May 7).

A cordon has been put in place and the ambulance service is also in attendance.

Police are on scene and are working to get the road opened as soon as possible.

A police spokesperson said: "Please be aware Shear Bank Road, Blackburn is currently closed at the junction with Park Avenue due to a road traffic collision. Please avoid the area where possible.

"We're working to reopen this as soon as possible.

"Many thanks for your patience."

Cllr Hussain Akhtar who represents the Shear Brow and Corporation Park ward on Blackburn with Darwen Council said: "We have campaigned on this road for a long time for better safety but we need to do more.

"We have done some things, with speed bumps and road markings but more needs to be done.

"Thank God though this time it was nothing to do with speed and although the car is damaged, the driver is ok.

"But the thing is, this area, Corporation Park, there's a lot of schools and a lot of people crossing the roads to use the park and to get to the schools, and we need more safety and people need to be careful around that area.

"Thankfully though everyone is ok this time."
