One road has re-opened but two others remain closed following a building fire in Preston yesterday evening (May 1).

Mount Street and Theatre Street are still closed but Church Street is now open, though people are asked to proceed with care.

Six fire engines were called to a fire on Mount Street, Preston, just before 6pm.

Several roads in the city centre were closed due to the fire at the Old Orphanage, which is not currently being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Following on from our post yesterday evening about a fire on Mount Street, Mount Street and Theatre Street are still closed currently.

"Church Street has reopneed and is now passable but please proceed with care."

This is the third time a fire has broken out in the same vicinity in the last 12 months.

A spokesperson for the fire service said last night: "Six fire engines from Penwortham, Preston, Fulwood, Bamber Bridge, and Leyland, and two aerial ladder platforms from Preston and Blackpool were called to a building fire on Mount Street, Preston.

"Firefighters used one jet and one hose reel to bring the incident under control.

"Firefighters will remain at the scene until Tuesday morning when a multi-agency meeting will take place.

"The fire at this moment in time is not believed to have been started deliberately but a full fire investigation will begin once the fire has been fully extinguished."
