Update - National Highways confirmed at around 5.20pm that all lanes are now open on the A56 Northbound. There is seven miles of congestion following the incident and allow plenty of time for these delays to clear.
One lane is currently blocked on the A56 after a multi-vehicle crash, causing four-mile queues and 40-minute delays.
There is queueing traffic on the road close to the junction for Ramsbottom, where the M66 becomes the A56.
Lancashire Police said three vehicles were involved in the damage-only crash though only one currently remains at the scene.
There is said to be nobody injured.
National Highways North West said: "There are reports of a multi-vehicle collision on the A56 northbound between the M66 and A682 Rawtenstall with lanes blocked.
"There are four miles of congestion on approach causing 40 minute delays above normal travel time."
AA Traffic News said: "Reports of queueing traffic due to crash on A56 Northbound after M66 (Ramsbottom Junction).
