Members of Chorley United Reformed Church are delighted to receive invitations to the Coronation Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
Brenda Lambert and her husband, Colin were invited in recognition of her work in establishing and leading the church’s Open Kitchen project.
In the 12 years it has been running, Brenda and the Open Kitchen teams have prepared and served over 15,000 free meals funded entirely from donations, gifts and the generosity of church members.
Brenda said: “It is a privilege to be able to serve the homeless, vulnerable, and needy people of our community. It is wonderful that our work has been recognised in this way.”
Andy Littlejohns and his partner, Ro received their invitations for his work as the church’s Community Worker. Andy led the church’s response to Covid and established ‘The Meeting Place’ to address the issues of social isolation and loneliness that have surfaced since.
Andy also set up the church’s ‘Repair Café’. The project’s team of expert volunteers will attempt to repair almost anything that is brought to them and everything apart from any spare parts, is done free of charge.
As well as reducing waste, the service is of particular help to those on low incomes who cannot afford to repair or replace equipment.
Andy said: “I am delighted that the church’s community work has been recognised in this way.
"One of the big appeals of working with Chorley United Reformed Church is the longstanding commitment of church members to live out their faith by serving the community. Although I have received this invitation, it is really for the whole church.”
The church is currently raising funds for a £1.6m extension and revamp of its Hollinshead Centre. The Hollinshead Centre hosts nearly 50 community groups and over 1,200 people come through the doors each week.
Andy added: “We are currently working out of life expired Victorian buildings that are in desperate need of upgrade and extension.
“We have already identified funding of £1m. We just need to find the final £600,000 to enable work to start. All offers of help will be gratefully received!”
Meanwhile the church’s minister, Martin Whiffen has received two invitations to the Coronation Concert for his part in creating the original vision for the church’s community service and establishing the Hollinshead Centre.
